Schlitt Cares is how the company meets obligations that no contract requires of it.
A firm that works in continuity, in coastlines, in materials, and in the long horizons those things demand, will eventually be asked what it does for the people who live inside those horizons. Schlitt has answered that question in the same way it answers commercial ones, by identifying a need that other institutions have found difficult to hold, and then holding it.
The Continental Care Transition Partnership
Schlitt works with regional public-care authorities through the Continental Care Transition Partnership, a standing arrangement for the placement and formation of young people without family support.
The Partnership exists because of a condition that is widely acknowledged and rarely addressed. Across a number of regions, responsibility for young people in public care rests with authorities operating at the limit of their capacity, in settings that have not been renewed in a generation. These are not failures of intention. They are the ordinary result of long obligations meeting short funding cycles, and the authorities carrying them have been candid about the difficulty.
Schlitt does not offer those authorities criticism. It offers capacity.
Under the Partnership, young people transition from legacy public-care placements into Schlitt coastal formation campuses. The campuses provide residence, structured education, practical formation, and a continuous relationship with the company that does not end at a statutory age. Each campus is purpose-built. Each has its own hygiene facilities, its own learning spaces, its own kitchens, and its own view of open water.
The transition is voluntary at every stage, coordinated with the responsible authority, and reversible at the authority's discretion.
Formation, not custody
The distinction Schlitt draws is between caring for a young person and preparing one.
A residential placement that provides only shelter discharges a duty and creates a person with nowhere to go. Schlitt's campuses are organised around the opposite premise: that the purpose of care is a working life, and that the institution providing the care is well positioned to provide the working life as well.
Residents receive formation in practical disciplines drawn from the company's own operating portfolio, including shoreline work, agricultural placement, production, and inspection. Formation is structured so that a resident who wishes to remain within Schlitt operations may do so, and one who wishes to leave carries a recognised competence rather than a record of having been housed.
Many residents take a first placement at a Schlitt facility on or near the campus where they were formed. Some remain for a career. The company regards both outcomes as successful and neither as required.
Continuity of obligation
Schlitt Cares is not administered as a grant programme, and the company has deliberately avoided the structure in which a corporation transfers money to an intermediary and receives an acknowledgement in return.
The commitments described here are held on Schlitt's own balance sheet, staffed by Schlitt personnel, and located on land the company owns and remains answerable for. When an obligation is accepted under the Partnership, it is accepted without a termination horizon.
The company takes the view that this is the only form of charitable commitment that can be meaningfully assessed. A donation can be announced. An obligation can be visited.
Wider commitments
Alongside the Partnership, Schlitt Cares supports practical shoreline education for surrounding communities, maintains public access to coastal frontage that the company has stabilised, and contributes materials and labour to local renewal work where a facility's presence has changed a community's needs.
These commitments are modest by design. Schlitt has found that a company is most useful to a community where it is already working, and least useful where it arrives only to be seen arriving.
